CH2M HILL, with more than 25,000 employees and $6.4 billion in annual revenues, is a full-service engineering, procurement, construction, management, and operations firm for government, civil, industrial, and energy clients.

Founded in 1946, the employee-owned company is a global leader in program management, construction management, and design, as ranked by Engineering News-Record (2008). CH2M HILL has long been recognized as a most-admired company and leading employer, including being named by FORTUNE as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For (2009).

CH2M HILL has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and problem-solving, from cleaning up Oregon’s Willamette River in the early days of the company’s history to leadership in the development of the hazardous waste remediation market in the 1980s. Few other companies have the depth and breadth of experience and expertise from which to provide safe, innovative, practical, and sustainable solutions to help their clients develop and manage the facilities and infrastructure that enhance quality of life.

In addition to the major concentrations mentioned above, CH2M HILL provides a number of core services including front end engineering, detailed design, r esource assessment, technology evaluation, feasibility analysis, project siting, permitting and licensing, facility design and construction, and operations and maintenance.

When it comes to biofuels, CH2M HILL has a unique and proven track record. They have helped deliver first-of-a-kind processes from the lab and pilot plant to commercial scale. And they have developed processes and facilities, with proven or emerging technologies, to make biofuels from numerous renewable feedstocks.

For example, CH2M HILL helped with design, build, and construction of one of the first commercial cellulosic ethanol plants in the United Sates. The up to 100 million gallon-per-year ethanol plant, to be located in the South, uses wood and wood waste from the state’s pine forests and mills as feedstock.

The company was also just tapped by ZeaChem to build its first biorefinery. The refinery is for a cellulose-based platform capable of producing third-generation ethanol fuel and intermediate chemicals, while increasing output and reducing both production costs and environmental impacts.

ZeaChem Inc., named one of the “50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy, ” chose CH2M HILL because the company “delivers the horsepower to manage the EPC of ZeaChem’s first biorefinery as we progress toward the deployment of commercial scale facilities,” said James Imbler, CEO and president of ZeaChem.

In the Rocky Mountain West, CH2M HILL is working to support the design and start-up of a pilot biobutanol facility. The program is designed prove and refine the technology and is expected to scale up to a demonstration plant within the next 24 months.

CH2M HILL sees strong growth in the Biofuels industry. “Clearly, the government, industry, and the public are looking for greater supplies of reliable, renewable, domestic energy,” said Wayne Wajciechowski, vice president Biofuels Operations, CH2M HILL. “As technology advances and new production comes on line, I see the importance and demand for biofuels to grow exponentially.
